There have been several rumors surrounding the possibility of the New England Patriots trading for A.J. Brown, the wide receiver from the Philadelphia Eagles, during this offseason. However, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald explains why making such a deal could prove challenging.

“From what we are hearing from the team, what the Eagles want for him is a little bit silly,” Kyed said on Saturday via Patriots on CLNS. “That’s tied to A.J. Brown’s contract situation because the Eagles want to get as much as they can for him, because if they trade him before June 1, they will subtract $20 million from their cap space.

“That is something that Howie Roseman isn’t going to be in a rush to do. He might be forced to do it, but it’s easier to trade him after June 1, then they actually gain $7 million in cap space.”

If the Patriots are looking to trade for Brown, they may need to part with quite a bit of capital, as the Eagles will lose $20 million in cap space before June 1 and will have to rely on draft picks to fill out the roster.

Even if the Eagles are considering trading Brown after June 1, it can be quite challenging to bring in a wide receiver during the summer, especially after the whirlwind of free agency and the NFL draft has already wrapped up.

“The timing of trading a wide receiver after June 1, when teams are already forming their wide receiver rooms, is pretty rough, and the Eagles are trading him at that point, then they are acquiring a 2027 first pick, and that can use that for another year,” Kyed added.

It doesn’t sound too promising that the Patriots will land Brown this offseason, so New England might want to consider other options.
