The Indianapolis Colts have granted permission to quarterback Anthony Richardson to explore trade options on Thursday, and one of the top rivals of the New England Patriots could be a landing spot for him.
NFL.com recently published its top trade possibilities for Richardson, and Jeffri Chadiha believes that the New York Jets stand out as the most suitable option.
“The Jets make the most sense,” Chadiah wrote on Friday. “They just spent last season hoping Justin Fields could turn into a reliable starter. Richardson will cost a lot less since he’s still on a rookie deal, and he brings a skill set similar to that of Fields and Tyrod Taylor, last year’s backup. There are weapons to work with — with wide receiver Garrett Wilson and the reports that the team is working to keep running back Breece Hall — and the offensive line has improved dramatically over the last two years. Adding a cost-effective quarterback like Richardson also would give this team more financial flexibility to keep building for the future.”
The Colts selected Richardson with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but he hasn’t lived up to expectations. Over the course of three seasons, he has appeared in 17 games, throwing for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
New York needs to seek a quarterback upgrade over Field this offseason, but Richardson has yet to demonstrate that he can fill that role. He possesses elite athleticism and impressive tools, but he has struggled to put everything together at the NFL level.
