Rafael Devers was a late scratch from the San Francisco Giants lineup on Friday.
San Francisco removed Devers from their lineup before facing the Los Angeles Dodgers in Scottsdale, Arizona. The former Boston Red Sox slugger didn’t play because of left hamstring tightness, per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic.
Devers started last spring late for Boston while dealing with a shoulder issue. He opened the season with five hitless games but repaired his slash line to .272/.401/.504 before the Red Sox surprisingly traded him to the Giants in June.
The two-time Silver Slugger belted 20 homers in 90 games with the Giants, but he batted .236 with an uncharacteristically high 29.4 percent strikeout rate. Following considerable drama over moving from third base in Boston, Devers shifted to first base.
Devers is preparing to stay at first with five-time Gold Glove winner Matt Chapman roaming the hot corner. Chapman looked forward to spending more time with his new teammate during Friday’s pre-game interview with Foul Territory.

“He came in from Day 1 and was amazing,” Chapman said of Devers. “Unreal teammate, great person, works really hard. I know he started slow with us. There was a lot going on, a lot of a transition period. But the thing I’m most excited for is probably just to see him in a full season. When he’s him, he’s a catalyst for any team.”
The Giants will hope the hamstring tightness is a minor issue for Devers, who has plenty of time to heal before San Francisco opens the season against the New York Yankees on March 25. Devers won’t want to miss another chance to torment his old American League East rival, whom he’s crushed 31 home runs against in 119 career games.
