Five Former Red Sox Surprisingly Still Available In Free Agency

Former Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito still remains available in free agency, which is a development that has surprised almost everyone around MLB baseball, including Garrett Crochet.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman pointed out Giolito’s availability on Friday, and in listing off the other notable available FA’s, Heyman happened to mentioned four other former Red Sox: Tommy Pham, Justin Turner, Jose Iglesias, and Alex Verdugo.

Pham arrived in Boston via trade from Cincinnati midway through 2022, appearing in 53 games with a .234 average, six home runs, and 24 RBI while providing outfield depth. He departed as a free agent after the season.

Turner signed with the Red Sox for the 2023 season, delivering a strong performance with a .276 average, 23 homers, and 96 RBI in 146 games as a designated hitter and infielder. He opted out following the year.

Iglesias debuted with Boston in 2011, playing parts of three seasons before a 2013 trade. He briefly rejoined in 2021 for eight games, hitting .356.

Verdugo spent four seasons with the Red Sox from 2020 to 2023, compiling a .281 average, 43 home runs, and 206 RBI across 493 games, offering consistent outfield production. Traded after 2023, he’s struggled with the Yankees and other clubs since.

Then there’s Giolito, who joined the Red Sox on a two-year deal ahead of the 2024 season but missed that entire year due to elbow surgery. He bounced back in 2025, posting a 10-4 record with a 3.41 ERA over 26 starts and 145 innings, contributing significantly to Boston’s playoff berth, though an elbow issue sidelined him for the postseason.
